TG-1000 Time Gate Controller

Overview

TG-1000 front view

The primary purpose of the TG-1000 is to provide accurate timing for sets of remote transmitter controllers running 2-level of 4-level FLEX with or without Golay or POCSAG. When placed at a teleport (satellite uplink) site, the unit accepts pages in TNPP format, adds periodic timing control frames in TNPP command format, and passes all frames, renumbered, on to the teleport uplink equipment. The TG-1000 derives accurate time from either the Palisades or Acutime™ 2000 GPS Smart Antenna (both by Trimble), also required at the teleport site.

The block diagram, shown below, denotes the input and output ports of the unit. TNPP traffic from one or more paging providers (the backhaul traffic) is collected at the teleport site and submitted to the TG-1000. This traffic feeds into port two of the unit at rates up to 19,200 baud. GPS timing data with an accuracy of < 100 microseconds is obtained from the GPS smart antenna via an RS-422 interface. This long-haul interface allows for remote location of the GPS antenna, up to 3,000 feet from the TG-1000! Remote location of the GPS antenna is generally necessary, since it must see a good portion of the sky. Port one delivers the composite stream of TNPP pages and TNPP command (timing) pages to the satellite uplink transmitter.

The TG-1000 is designed to work with sets of Kantronics' transmitter controllers, the FC-2000, the FC-2500, and the FC-3000, placed over a wide geographic area. These controllers stay synchronized with each other by processing the TNPP timing commands sent to them by the TG-1000 via the satellite link. These controllers simulcast by encoding in exactly the same manner the composite stream of pages included with the timing commands. Each controller adjusts for its path delay from the satellite and encodes the TNPP pages into FLEX, Golay, and POCSAG pages.

The unit is configured via the console port. Thirty-five (35) commands are used to set parameters and the mode of operation. The console port may be attached to a telephone modem for remote control. Status may be checked and parameter changes may be made while the unit is in its uplink mode without affecting traffic flow.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The TG-1000 fits in a one-unit 19-inch rack space. The front panel includes a power switch, power LED, and signal LEDS denoting input and output data activity. The back panel includes an AMP type screw-down terminal and four DB-9M connectors: (2) for the TNPP ports, (1) for console port, and (1) for the GPS port. The size of the case is 14.2 by 4.4 by 1/15.
